The Monday Mess

When Will and I looked at our savings, time off, etc, we decided not to take a Caribbean vacation this winter. It would be the first time in four years that we skipped seeing the clear water of the western Carribean, the sand in Miami, or the palm trees in Key West, but what we were going to miss above everything else was the escape from Blacksburg's freezing temperatures. Last year we timed it just right and missed the -10 degree days!! After this weekend, I can safely say that we picked the right year to skip because the tropical weather showed up on our door step and has stayed for close to a week! In fact, I think I got a sun burn in 78 degree weather on Christmas day!! Can we talk about how crazy that is?!

Even though it wasn't going to be a white Christmas like so many people hope for, it was one of our favorites. We headed down to see Will's parents and family in NC. They have the coolest back porch area that we pretty much live out on when we visit in the Spring and Summer. Since the weather was on our side, we got to enjoy sitting outside for most of the days grilling, drinking a couple beers, and enjoying time with family. It was perfect!

A few things we learned:

  • Zoo animals and Christmas lights apparently go together. The local zoo just minutes from Will's parents' home put on their annual light show. On Christmas eve we drove through and ended it in the barns where we got to see lions, and tigers, and giraffes... Oh my! The giraffe stuck it's head right out of it's area into my lap. I didn't know what to do but at least Will got a picture!! Also, giraffe tongues are very rough! Who knew?!
  • Just about anything can be Star Wars themed. This isn't really something I learned this weekend as much as I've learned over the last several weeks. Seriously, I recently saw a Star Wars blender! All I have to say is you can't smoothie your way into having "the force."
  • Video is a different animal than photo. Please feel free to say "duh," but when Will and I got out our video gear to practice with this weekend, I realized so many unforeseen challenges that we will be having as we start ramping up this skill set, but also there are so many more creative opportunities! Adding this whole dimension of time is really going to be tricky! I'm sure I'll share A LOT more on this at a later time.
  • If you give each of the three Bulloss brothers something that flies for Christmas, only one will survive past 24 hours. Let's just say out of those three toy drones, one is melted, one only flies directly left into walls, and one can still "fly" up and down. Good job guys. :P
  • Mica WILL jump the back fence. Christian and B's sweet little pup, Mica, has mad ups and can easily clear just about any fence. Don't worry, she was back in 'captivity' within a minute! Also, please feel free to be embarrassed for me for saying "mad ups."
  • There are a lot of things that DO make Christmas special and the most important of these is family. Between my family and Will's we were given so many amazing gifts BUT what we cherish the most is that we got to spend time with our loved ones. I can't help but reflect on how blessed we are to be surrounded by so much love.

Here are a few favorites from this weekend! There are a mix of DSLR and iPhone. :)

Pretty much our favorite spot of the weekend...

Sorry ladies, he's taken...

There was a new hot tub, but we mostly sat on top of it instead of in it considering the temperature!

Setting up the new weather station. It has already accurately predicted a rain storm! So neat!

Best dessert ever!

This is how a gift master (get it, like Jedi master??) carries multiple gifts... can I get a laugh? Anyone? Pitty laugh?

The Virginia Tech verse North Carolina battle continues...

Annnd then the toy drones were opened...

Lilly and I were not impressed...

Will was...

Annnnd it's off!

Annnnd it's on the ground... and for some reason on Mica's head! That's also a very good derp face, Mica!

Will wanted you to know how good I am at wrapping gifts...

We were very focused...
